Pavel Shmulevich (Bass)

Pavel Shmulevich was born in St Petersburg. Graduated from the vocal faculty of the St Petersburg State Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire (class of Professor Khanedanian). Soloist with the Mariinsky Academy of Young Singers since 2000. Made his Mariinsky Theatre debut in 2001 as Antonio in the opera Il viaggio a Reims. Joined the Mariinsky Opera in 2008.

The singer’s repertoire also includes the roles of Gremin (Eugene Onegin), Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Colas (Bastien und Bastienne), Rocco (Fidelio), Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) and the bass roles in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Stravinsky’s Le Renard, Histoire burlesque chantée et jouée.

He has taken part in Mariinsky Theatre tours to Paris (Théâtre du Châtelet, Il viaggio a Reims, 2005), London (Coliseum, Moscow, Cheryomushki and The Nose, 2006), Washington (Kennedy Center, Il viaggio a Reims, 2007), Tokyo (The Love for Three Oranges, 2008), New York (Avery Fisher Hall, The Love for Three Oranges, 2008) and Stockholm (Elektra, 2008).

In 2004 he took part in a new production of the operetta Moscow, Cheryomushki at the Opéra de Lyons (France). The same year, he performed the role of Celio (The Love for Three Oranges) in Aix-en-Provence, a role he also sang in Luxembourg (2005) and at the Teatro Real in Madrid (2006). In 2006 he took part in a performance of Shostakovich’s musical tale The Silly Little Mouse at the BBC Proms. Since 2008 he has been a student at the Accademia di Montegral, directed by Gustav Kuhn. In 2009 at the Moscow Easter Festival he took part in a performance of the opera Le Rossignol (as the Chamberlain) in Moscow and the opera Il viaggio a Reims (as Antonio) in Yaroslavl. That year he performed the roles of the Night Watchman and Pogner (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) at the Tyrolean Festival. In the 2009-2010 season he appeared at the Anhaltische Theater Dessau, performing the roles of King Heinrich (Lohengrin) and Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) as well as taking part in an opera gala. 
In the 2012-2013 season at the Konzert Theater Bern he performed the roles of Rocco (Fidelio), Osmin (Die Entführung aus dem Serail) and Banco (Macbeth). In the 2013-2014 season at the Mariinsky Theatre he made his debuts as Banco (Macbeth), King Heinrich (Lohengrin), Daland (Der Fliegende Holländer), and Ramfis (Aida) while at the Konzert Theater Bern he appeared as Kaspar (Der Freischütz).

He has worked with conductors including Pierre Boulez, Yuri Bashmet, Alexander Lazarev and Mikko Franck.

His discography includes DVD recordings of the operas The Love for Three Oranges (Celio, Aix en Provence, 2004) and I viaggio a Reims (Antonio, Théâtre du Châtelet, 2005).
