Eugene Onegin is an opera ("lyrical scenes") in 3 acts (7 scenes), by Peter Tchaikovsky. The libretto was written by Konstantin Shilovsky and the composer and his brother Modest, and is based on the novel in verse by Alexander Pushkin.

Eugene Onegin is a well-known example of lyric opera; the libretto very closely follows Pushkin's original, retaining much of his poetry, to which Tchaikovsky adds music of a dramatic nature. The story concerns a selfish hero who lives to regret his blasй rejection of a young woman's love and his careless incitement of a fatal duel with his best friend.

The opera was first performed in Moscow in 1879. There are several recordings of it, and it is regularly performed. The work's title refers to the protagonist.

A native of Kiev, Andriy Zholdak has firmly established himself on the European theatrical scene, staging productions based on shocking dreams and expressive illusions. Nevertheless, he is keeping the details of the concept behind his new production a closely guarded secret.

“I have set myself the task of obtaining sympathy and empathy among the audience”, says the director. “I wish to give the viewer an opportunity to follow the secret life of a human soul. There are two principal words which I use to denote the upcoming production: sensuality and beauty.”

The director has assembled a star-studded team to work with him on his new interpretation of Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s opera. The costumes are being created by Latvian fashion design house Mareunrol’s (Rolands Peterkops and Marite Mastina-Peterkopa). His shows are marked by a careful formulation of a concept not only of the apparel, but also, for real dramatic effect, of the accessories and the lighting. This combination of elements has resulted in great success on the catwalks of Berlin and Paris.

Mareunrol’s (Rolands Peterkops and Marite Mastina-Peterkopa) will bring an air of the present day to the production. Instead of reconstructing in the fashion of a particular epoch in detail, the designer aims to present historical costumes as perceived through the prism of contemporary taste on the stage.

Working together with Andriy Zholdak on the set design for the new Onegin is Monika Pormale, who has designed the sets for the majority of the productions at the legendary New Riga Theatre. In parallel to her career as one of Europe’s most influential theatre set designers, Pormale has enjoyed success in contemporary art with her photographs and installations, and has numerous exhibitions and artistic projects in Latvia and other European countries to her name. Her most recent work was seen on the stages of the Munich Kammerspiele, the Cologne Schauspielhaus, and the Vienna Burgtheater.

Lighting for the production will be the work of A.J. Weissbard, one of the world’s most sought-after lighting designers. Weissbard has collaborated with some of the great masters of contemporary theatre, including Robert Wilson, Peter Stein, William Kentridge, and Luca Ronconi, and has also worked with leading film directors Peter Greenaway and David Cronenberg.

The production’s Musical Director is Mikhail Tatarnikov, a young conductor who enjoys widespread popularity with the public and, in musical circles, a reputation for solid professionalism. Tatarnikov has been Musical Director and Principal Conductor of the Mikhailovsky Theatre since January 2012.
