Donvena Pandoursky (Choreography)

Born in Sofia, Bulgaria. School education at the State Ballet School in Sofia teached by the Feya Balabina – honorary artist of the USSR and Marina Kolyadenko – honorary artist of Belarus. After the final exams in 1978 she was Ballet dancer at the Ballet of the National Opera Sofia and later at Ballet «Arabesque» until 1984. In the same year she started her choreography studies at the State Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov-Conservatoire Leningrad (Russia) teached by Sergei Vikulov – honorary artist of the USSR. 1988 she got the diploma. Since 1989 she lived and worked in Stuttgart, Germany. She made choreographies for the Noverre Society – «Young Choreographers» with the Stuttgart Ballet: Aria – music by Heitor Villa-Lobos, Elbow Room – music by John Abercrombie, The Woman – music by Sergei Rachmaninoff and other for ballet films.

1994 she became Choreographer at the Ballet of the National Opera Sofia and staged the ballets Tchaikovsky – 6th Symphony and Concert op. 79 – music by Carl Maria von Weber. 1989 to 1994 she also worked as guest pedagogue for The Stuttgart Ballet, Bejart Ballet, Ballet of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein – Dusseldorf, Ballet of the Pfalztheater – Kaiserslautern, Royal Swedish Ballet – Stockholm, Ballet of the State Opera Goteborg – Sweden, London City Ballet a.o. Since 1998 she lives and works in Munster, Germany. 1998 she made the choreography for a ballet suite for the gala- concert War and Piece for the ARD-WDR (German television) on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the Westfalian Piece. 1999 she founded the ballet company «Ballet Westfalica» (since 2001: «Ballet Pandoursky») and became its artistic director. She directed the ballets Bravo Figaro – music by Gioacchino Rossini, Ebony Concerto – music by Igor Stravinsky, Carmen – music by Georges Bizet–Rodion Shchedrin, Pas de deux and clarinet a.o. Her company participated in the Munster Dance Festival in 1999, 2000, 2002 and 2004. She also teached at summer ballet seminars. 2000 she made the choreography of Choir Phantasy – music by Ludwig van Beethoven for the gala concert Rojen 2000 /Bulgaria/ under the patronage of the president of Republic Bulgaria danced by the Ballet of the National Opera Sofia. In the same year she staged the ballet Four Nights – music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Symphony No.34, KV338 in C-Dur), Sergei Rachmaninoff (Symphonical Dances, Op.45), Leonard Bernstein (Prelude, Fugue and Riffs), Aaron Copland (Concerto for clarinet and string orchestra), Morton Gould (Derivations for clarinet and band), Jacques Offenbach (Gaite parisienne) /arr. Manuel Rosenthal/ very successfully. 2001 she directed for her company in Munster Ballet behind the wings with soloists of the Ballet of the National Opera Sofia and participated in the concert Dance against terror. 2002 the Ballet of the National Opera Sofia participated in the International Music Festival Ancara, Turkey with her ballet Four Nights. In the same year she staged her new Ballet Alice behind the mirror – music by Dmitrii Shostakovich (film, ballet and jazz suites), Where is Bulgaria? – authentic Bulgarian folk music and Rhythm and Style- Hip-hop meets Ballet for her company in Munster. 2004 she staged for her company the ballet Tango Piazzolla – music by Astor Piazzolla with great success. She is also author of libretti and screenplays. Her husband Mihail Pandoursky is film director and award winner of international film festivals. Her daughter Tzveta Pandoursky is a student.
