Yulia Gertseva (Mezzo soprano)
Yulia Gertseva was born in Leningrad and graduated from
the Leningrad State Conservatoire. While still a second-year student
she joined the opera company of the Musorgsky Theatre of Opera and
Ballet (today the Mikhailovsky Theatre). In 2003 he international
career began to take off following her performance as Varvara (Kata
Kabanova) at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. She has subsequently
gown on to perform at the world’s great theatres, singing lead
mezzo-soprano roles such as Carmen (Carmen), Dalila (Samson et
Dalila), Amneris (Aida), Eboli (Don Carlo), Preziosilla
(La forza del destino), Charlotte (Werther), Venus
(Tannhauser), Marina Mnishek (Boris Godunov), Polina
(The Queen of Spades), Herodiade (Herodiade) and Tigrana
(Edgar) among others. She has performed the role of Carmen at
La Scala, the Staatsoper in Hamburg, the Accademia Santa Cecilia
in Rome (under Georges Pretre), the Semperoper in Dresden,
the Valencia Opera (under Lorin Maazel), the Teatro Comunale
in Florence (under Zubin Mehta), the Bayerisches Staatsoper and
in Turin and Tokyo (with the Opera de Lausanne). The singer’s
repertoire also includes Verdi’s Requiem, Musorgsky’s Songs and Dances of
Death and Berlioz’ Romeo et Juliette.
