Algirdas Paulavichus (Conductor)

Conductor of the Young Philharmonic Orchestra

Honoured Artist of Russia. Conductor of the Mariinsky Theatre Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (founded by its artistic director Valery Gergiev). Artistic director, conductor and prize-winner of music and student festivals given by the Rimsky-Korsakov Music School?s Symphony Orchestra. Born in Kaunas (Lithuania). Has been living and working in St Petersburg since 1962.

Graduated from the Leningrad Conservatoire, specialising in choral, operatic and symphonic conducting. In the 1960?s and 70?s, performed as a pianist, violinist and flautist and orchestrated and conducted various ensembles. Subsequently taught conducting at the Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatoire and Music School.

Received an honour for "developing the St Petersburg school" by the Governor of St Petersburg in 1997.
Has conducted at concerts and, at the same time, for cinema since the 1980?s (over twenty-five films) and composer (he has written music for eleven films). Was head of the music editing department of the Lenfilm studios and has worked as a conductor and consultant with renowned composers and directors including Petrov, Uspensky, Schwartz, Legrand (France), Heifezeim, Sokurov, Hofmann (Poland), Anderson (Great Britain) and Sato (Japan).

Has conducted and staged operas and musical productions. Rossini?s opera L?Italiana in Algeri was named best production of the year in Latvia (Klaiped Music Theatre, 1990). Matus? opera A Song of the Love and Death of Christophe Rilke?s Cornet was awarded Russia?s highest theatrical prize, the Golden Mask, for best opera production (St Petersburg Opera, 1999). Is a guest conductor both in Russia and abroad, including in Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Latvia, Mexico, Finland, Sweden, Germany and Italy.
