St. Petersburg Chamber Opera

Click to enlarge The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera Company is home to many world-class soloists and an outstanding orchestra. Its repertoire includes the finest classical Russian and Western European Operas. Since it was established, the company has won many prestigious prizes, although its greatest achievement has been to acquire its own Home, a building of unique beauty and artistic potential in the Baron von Derviz Mansion, located in the very heart of old St. Petersburg.

The Chamber Music Theatre was established in Leningrad in 1987 by YURI ALEXANDROV, one of Russia‘s leading musical theatre directors, famed as an innovator in opera, an Honoured Artist of Russia and recipient of the Russian Golden Mask and St Petersburg Golden Sophit theatre prizes. Over time, the St. Petersburg Chamber Opera Company "creative laboratory" (as it was initially conceived by the director) has evolved into a professional State theatre, well-known both throughout Russia and abroad.

Click to enlarge In spite of its being a young theatre, the Company has a rich creative history. Over seventeen seasons, the Chamber Theatre has emerged as a single artistic entity with its own unique repertoire. The Company is made up of talented soloists and musicians, many of whom are Honoured Artists of Russia and prize-winners at International and All-Russian Competitions. The repertoire of the St. Petersburg Chamber Opera Company covers works from every operatic genre from comic opera and opera-buffa to musical drama and pieces by contemporary composers, among them Adam de la Halle‘s Le Jeu de Robin et Marion, Bortnyansky‘s The Falcon, Zimmermann‘s Die Weisse Rose, Piguzov‘s I Believe, Smelkov‘s The Skewbald Dog Running at the Edge of the Sea and The Fifth Voyage of Christopher Columbus, Donizetti‘s Il campanello di notte and Rita, ou Le Mari battu, Tchaikovsky‘s Eugene Onegin, Musorgsky‘s Boris Godunov (nominated for the Russian Golden Mask in 1996), Shostakovich‘s Gamblers 1942 (awarded St Petersburg‘s highest theatre prize, the Golden Sophit, in the category "Best director in musical theatre" in 1997 and nominated for Russia‘s highest theatre prize, the Golden Mask, in 1998), Verdi‘s Rigoletto (nominated for a Golden Mask in 1998), Matthus‘ Weise von Liebe und Tod des Cornet Christoph Rilke (awarded a Golden Mask in 1999 in the category "Best opera production"), Tchaikovsky‘s The Queen of Spades (nominated for the Golden Mask in 2000), Offenbach‘s La Belle Helene, Shostakovich‘s The Antiformalist Rayok, Cilea‘s Adrienne Lecouvreur, Donizetti‘s Don Pasquale and Il falegname di Livonia, ossia Pietro il Grande and Puccini‘s Gianni Schicchi.

Click to enlarge The St. Petersburg Chamber Opera Company has staged operas that are performed in St Petersburg exclusively at the Chamber Theatre, among them Donizetti‘s Rita, ou Le Mari battu and Il campanello di notte, Bortnyansky‘s The Falcon, Cimarosa‘s Il matrimonio segreto, Shostakovich‘s Gamblers 1942 and The Antiformalist Rayok, Cilea‘s Adrienne Lecouvreur and Donizetti‘s Il falegname di Livonia, ossia Pietro il Grande. Almost all of these productions were the first ever staged in Russia.

The Theatre has toured to Finland, Switzerland, Germany, the USA, Moscow and many other cities throughout Russia. In 1997, the Theatre organised and ran a Gaetano Donizetti music festival which saw the first ever Russian performance of the composer‘s Requiem.

After a lengthy period with no stage of its own, the Theatre finally acquired its own home in the Baron von Derviz mansion at 33 Galernaya Street in the heart of old Petersburg. The restored building was opened on 27 May 2003, the day of St Petersburg‘s tercentenary. A sensation on the European music scene, the premiere of Gaetano Donizetti‘s Il falegname di Livonia, ossia Pietro il Grande marked the start of a new era in the history of the St. Petersburg Chamber Opera Company.

The History of the Building

click to enlarge This small intimate mansion on Galernaya Street which belonged to Baron S. P. von Derviz at the turn of the 20th century, has a rich musical and theatrical history.
At the and of 19th century the mansion witnessed performances of the House of Interludes, staged by Vsevolod Meierhold, then working under the pseudonym of Doctor Dapertutto. Among those who participated in the performances were the poet and musician M. Kuzmin, and the artists N. Petrov and B. Kazarova-Volkova. Audiences included such figures as K. Stanislavsky, V. Nemirovich-Danchenko. From 1915, the building was known as the "Theatre and Concert Hall", and there were concerts with F. Chaliapin, L. Sobinov and I. Duncan.
Miraculously - after the club-house activities held there in Soviet times - its interior is intact: the baroque mouldings on the walls with sculptures symbolizing the arts, Genius swooping over the richly decorated proscenium, holding a lyre in both hands, and the von Derviz coat of Other interiors in the mansion have been preserved too, including the luxurious Moorish Drawing Room with its rich gilt embellishment, the Maple Drawing room with its decorative paneling, and the Conservatory designed in the style of an enchanted grotto.
The first variant of building was built in early 18th century. It was redesigned in 1876.
Baron S. P. von Derviz purchased the property in 1880.
Sergei Pavlovich von Derviz (1863 - 1918) was a descendent of the ancient Wiese family from Germany. In the mid 18th century, Johann-Adolf Wiese, then working in Sweden, entered the Russian service as a legal counsellor and was elevated to the noble rank of the Holy Roman Empire with the addition of "von der" to his name.
The architects P.P. Schreiber and N. B. Nabokov redesigned the property‘s facades both on the English Embankment and Galernaya Street to give it uniformity of style. The facade on Galernaya Street contains certain elements of the Renaissance style, slightly suggestive of a Florentine palazzo. Much attention was lavished on the mansion‘s interiors, which were executed in differing styles according to the fashion of the day.

On 27th May 2003, on the day of St Petersburg‘s tercentenary, and after lengthy repair work, the mansion once again became a "home to theatre", resounding to performances of operas and symphonies and witnessing new productions of the St Petersburg Chamber Opera Company, founded and directed by Yuri Alexandrov.
