Synopsis


There is a ball in the palace of the duke of Mantuya. The duke is paying court to countess Cheprano, causing jealousy of her husband. The jester sneers at the count Cheprano and advises to duke this night to steal the charming countess. Furious Cheprano swears to revenge Rigoletto. The fun of the ball is broken by appearance of the count Monterone who demands from the duke to return his daughter to him. The jester mocks at Monterone. The count threatens duke with terrible revenge for disgrace of his daughter and damns Rigoletto.
The damnation of Monterone does not give rest to Rigoletto. Coming back home in the evening he meets a hired murderer offering his service. The jester is disturbed for destiny of his daughter Jilda, who lives and indistinct suburbs together with her servant Jovanna. The father forbids to her to leave the house being afraid of the duke and his corrupted courtiers. Once in church Jilda has met a young man, whose beauty fascinated her. Suddenly she sees him before her. It is the duke, dressed as a student. He swears ardently to Jilda by his eternal love. Remaining alone, the girl is betrayed to charming dreams. And in the meantime courtiers gather at the house of Rigoletto: they have conceived to steal Jilda, considering her a lover of Rigoletto. Suddenly Rigoletto comes back and nearly breaks their plan, but courtiers convince him, that they prepare to steal countess Cheprano living beside and ask for the help of Rigoletto. He agrees to help. Then they put a mask on him, tying the shawl above. The muffled shouts of Jilda are heard from apart.
Rigoletto tears the bandage off and understands with horror , that his daughter is stolen.
The duke is annoyed: His wonderful foreigner has disappeared, all searches have appeared to be vain. Courtiers, wishing to amuse him, Tell him about the night adventure – the lover of Rigolett is in the palace now. The duke joyfully hastens in his rooms. Singing a song, enters Rigoletto, he searches for his daughter everywhere, hiding grief under affected gaiety. Finding out, that Jilda is in the palace he demands angrily to return his daughter, but courtiers are deaf to threats and entreaties of the jester. At this time Jilda in tears runs out of the room of the duke. Rigoletto swears to revenge for a shame of the daughter. The meeting with Monterone, Who is taken to prison strengthens his determination. Jilda in fear implores the father to forgive the duke.
The half-destroyed house of the robber Sparafuchille on a coast of the river. There is a deep night. Here comes the disguised duke. He is keen on a new passion – it is the beauty Maddalena, sister of the gangster. Jilda, having convinced in unfaithfulness of her beloved, parts in despair with her light dreams. Father sends her in Verona. By changing clothes in a man’s costume she should leave Mantuia this night. Rigoletto remains to pay for murder and to throw a corpse of the hated duke in the river himself. The thunder-storm begins. Maddalena, charmed by the handsome youth, asks her brother to spare him. After much persuasion Sparafuchille agrees to kill first, who will knock at the door. This conversation is heard by Jilda. She still loves the duke and has come here to warn him about the danger coming. For the rescue of her beloved she is ready to give back life. Jilda safely enters the house of the gangster. The thunder-storm abates. Rigoletto returns. Sparafuchille takes out the bag with a dead body. The jester triumphs – he took vengeance on his enemy at last ! Going to throw a corpse in the water, Rigoletto hears with horror a cheerful duke’s song. He cuts the bag and sees Jilda dying.
