Sergey Slonimsky Born in 1932
Composer, pianist, he graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory in 1955. He
studied composition under Boris Arapov, Vissarion Shebalin and Orest Yevlakhov,
polyphony under Nicolay Uspensky and piano under Anna Artobolevskaya, Samary
Savshinsky and Vladimir Nielsen. Since 1959 he has been a professor at the St
Petersburg Conservatory. Among his pupils one can name T.Dann, A.Zatin,
E.Igotti, V.Kobekin, S.Levkovskaya, V.Malakhovskaya, A.Radvilovich, V.Ryvkin,
V.Sapozhnikov, M.Hosseini.
Sergey Slonimsky composed more than two
hundred pieces: 5 operas(Virinea, Ioann the Terrible's Visions,
Tsar Iksion, Mary Stuart, The Master and Margarita, Hamlet), 2
ballets (Icarus and The Magic Nut), over 30 symphonies and works
in all genres of chamber, vocal, choral, theatre and cinema music, including
Pesn' Volnitsy (The Songs of Freedom, for mezzo-soprano, baritone
and symphony orchestra based on Russian folk songs, 1962), A Voice from the
Chorus, a cantata set to the poems by Alexander Blok, Concerto-Buffo,
Piano Concerto (Jewish Rhapsody), Cello Concerto, 24 preludes and fugues,
etc.
Among the conductors, who performed Slonimsky’s works one could
mention Yury Temirkanov, Valery Gergiev, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Vasily
Sinaysky, Kirill Kondrashin, Mikhail Jurowski, and Leonid Korchmar.
