Alfred Brendel is one of the greatest pianists of the age, renowned for his interpretations of works by the Viennese classics and the Romantics.
The pianist`s first appearance took place in Graz when he was seventeen. He performed a Fugue in Piano Rendition concert with works by Bach, Brahms, Liszt and some of his own compositions. The same day a Graz art gallery opened an exhibition of Brendel`s watercolours. Music, painting and literature hold equal merit in his sphere of interests. However, when he triumphed at the Ferruccio Busoni Pianists` Competition in 1949, Alfred Brendel devoted himself to performing. He later gave concerts in his native Austria and in cities throughout Europe, taking lessons from Paul Baumgartner, Edward Steuermann (a student of Busoni and Schoonberg) and Edwin Fischer. Brendel`s first recording dates from 1952 – Prokofiev`s Fifth Piano Concerto. Later came piano concerti and solo works by Liszt, Mozart, Schubert and Scho..nberg in addition to all of Beethoven`s piano music, earning the pianist a solid reputation in the world of music. In just one season (1982-83) with a programme including all thirty-two of Beethoven`s piano sonatas, Brendel performed seventy-two times in eleven cities in Europe and the USA. He was the first pianist after the legendary Arhur Schnabel to perform a cycle of Beethoven`s sonatas at Carnegie Hall. In 1996 Brendel made a repeat recording of the entire series. Three years later he completed a recording of five Beethoven piano concerti with the Wiener Philharmoniker under Sir Simon Rattle. Today the musician`s discography includes recordings of solo and orchestral works from Bach, Haydn and Weber to Liszt, Musorgsky and Schoonberg.
A refined musician, Brendel is a man of wide intellect. He has written articles and books, and is the composer of a cadenza for Mozart`s Piano Concerto in D minor.
Alfred Brendel has won numerous prizes and awards – the grand-prix of the Liszt Society, the Gramophone Award and the British Music Association Award among others. In recent years Alfred Brendel has worked with young
pianists, performed with his cellist son Adrian and written books and articles. In 2004 Brendel received the Ernst von Siemens Prize, one of the most prestigious music awards.
