Noah D. Gelber (Choreography)

Born in New York City, Noah D. Gelber began his dance training at the age of 5, singing and acting classes at the age of 7. He studied at the School of American Ballet for 11 years, performing often with the New York City Ballet while still a student. He also attended the High School of Performing Arts, and is a graduate of the Professional Children?s School. Noah was resident principal guest-artist with the American Ballet Company and performed in a New York production of "West Side Story" before leaving the United States at 17 to pursue his career in Europe. He was a soloist with the Royal Ballet of Flanders (Antwerp, Belgium) and appeared as a principal guest-artist around the U.S. and Mexico, before William Forsythe invited him to join the Frankfurt Ballet (Germany).

As a dancer, Noah has earned much acclaim for his speed, dynamism and precision, plus the ability to excel in the classical ballet genre as well as inspire contemporary choreographers. Over his 8 years of working with William Forsythe, he performed the greater part of the former Frankfurt Ballet?s repertoire, notably premiering in ?The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude?. He has also participated in international Galas dancing Forsythe solos, created especially for him. Well versed in the improvisation techniques Forsythe employs, Noah was chosen to demonstrate examples of these for the ?William Forsythe: Improvisation Technologies? CD-ROM, published in 1999. He regularly conducts Improvisation Workshops in Europe and North America. Utilizing Noah?s vocal talents, Forsythe repeatedly spotlighted him as a featured singer in his productions. Noah has also sung for German television, and performs live in concerts as an independent Pop-artist.

Noah was active in the choreographic processes at the Frankfurt Ballet, creating considerable solo and pas de deux material contained in some Forsythe pieces. His independent choreographic works have been presented in New York and Montreal. Noah?s most recent premier was in London, in August of 2005. His ballet "Object Ours", with an original commissioned piano score, premiered with Anton Pimonov from the Kirov Ballet and 2 dancers from the Royal Ballet.

William Forsythe first entrusted Noah with the responsibility of setting his work on other companies while he was still dancing with the Frankfurt Ballet. Now Noah is responsible for ballet-mastering 7 ballets from Forsythe?s repertoire, and he has set and coached these pieces on 25 major ballet companies around the world. In 2003 Noah set "The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude" on the Kirov Ballet, and then in 2004 he returned to set "Approximate Sonata" at the Mariinsky Theater.
