Alexander Sladkovsky (Conductor)

Alexander Sladkovsky was born in 1965. Graduated from the Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory and then from the St.-Petersburg State Conservatory (class of Prof.Vladimir Chernushenko). He is a laurea

Honoured Artist of Russia.

Alexander Sladkovsky studied music at the Moscow and St Petersburg Conservatoires. In 1997 he made his debut as a conductor at the Opera and Ballet Theatre of the St Petersburg State Conservatoire, where he led a performance of Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte. In 1999 he was a prize-winner at the III International Prokofiev Conducting Competition.
From 1997–2010 he was a conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of the St Petersburg State Academic Cappella, Principal Conductor of the Opera and Ballet Theatre of the St Petersburg State Conservatoire and the St Petersburg Cappella and a conductor of the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra. In 2005 he was invited by Mariss Jansons to collaborate on a production of the opera Carmen at the theatre of the St Petersburg Conservatoire as Assistant Conductor. In 2006 Mstislav Rostropovich invited him to take part in the programme Unknown Musorgsky, also presented at the St Petersburg Conservatoire.
Since 2010 he has been Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan.
He has appeared at major Russian and international festivals and projects, among them Musical Olympus, St Petersburg Musical Spring, Arts Square, The Wild Cherry Orchard, the All-Russian Irina Bogacheva Opera Singers’ Competition, the Alexander Tchaikovsky Foundation’s Youth Academies of Russia, the festival Rodion Shchedrin. Self-portrait, Young Euro Classic (Berlin), the XII and XIII Easter Festivals, Crescendo, Stars on Baikal, Denis Matsuev’s Orenburg Seasons, the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, the Arts Festival in Weimar, the Budapest Spring Festival, the V Festival of the World’s Symphony Orchestras, the XI Woerthersee Classics Festival (Klagenfurt, Austria), Folle Journée au Japon, the Hibla Gerzmava Invites festival and Opera a priori.
Alexander Sladkovsky performs music by such contemporary composers as Andrei Petrov, Rodion Shchedrin, Giya Kancheli, Sofia Gubaidulina, Alexei Rybnikov, Andrei Eshpai, Sergei Slonimsky, Boris Tishchenko, Yuri Krasavin and Roman Ledenev, as well as works by young composers from Moscow, St Petersburg, Kazan and Yekaterinburg. He has performed works by Alexander Tchaikovsky on numerous occasions. In 2003 he conducted the world premiere of the composer’s Third Symphony at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire.
Has performed with acclaimed Russian and world performers such as Denis Matsuev, Yuri Bashmet, Boris Berezovsky, Barry Douglas, Nikolai Lugansky, Alexander Toradze, Ekaterina Mechetina, Xenia Bashmet, Viktor Tretyakov, Vadim Repin, Julian Rachlin, Sergei Krylov, Alena Baeva, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, David Geringas, Alexander Knyazev, Mario Brunello, Alexander Rudin, Antônio Meneses, Montserrat Caballé, Olga Borodina, Simone Kermes, Hibla Gerzmava, Lyubov Kazarnovskaya, Albina Shagimuratova, Sumi Jo, Dinara Alieva, Roberto Alagna, Plácido Domingo, Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Vasily Gerello, Ildar Abdrazakov, Sergei Nakariakov, Igor Fyodorov and Alexei Ogrintchouk.
In the 2013–2014 season Alexander Sladkovsky appeared with the Symphony Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in a programme of works by Rachmaninoff. Thereafter he received an invitation to conduct a series of concerts of music by Tchaikovsky with the ensemble. As a guest conductor Alexander Sladkovsky works with the Symphony Orchestra of the State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of Russia, the Russian National Orchestra, the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the St Petersburg Philharmonic (Honoured Ensemble of Russia), the Bolshoi Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra, the National Philharmonic Orchestra of Russia, Sinfonica Siciliana (Italy), the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, the Niedersachsen Symphony Orchestra, the Budapest National Opera, the São Paulo Opera (Brazil), the Moscow, Novosibirsk and Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestras, the Sinfonia Varsovia and the symphony orchestra of the Maggio musicale fiorentino festival.
From 2001–2005 Sladkovsky was a guest conductor of the National Student Symphony Orchestra of Russia. This orchestra was established by the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the St Petersburg Conservatoire and it includes students and post-graduate students of the St Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Yekaterinburg, Kazan and Saratov Conservatoires.
At the Hermitage Theatre in 2001 Alexander Sladkovsky appeared as a conductor at a concert in honour of a State visit by the Queen of the Netherlands. He has also taken part in concerts in honour of Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, Mikhail Gorbachev, President of the USSR, and Bill Clinton and George Bush, Presidents of the USA.
The conductor founded and is Artistic Director of six music festivals in Kazan – Rachlin Seasons, White Lilac, Kazan Autumn, Concordia, Denis Matsuev with Friends and An Artistic Revelation. Concerts by the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan under the baton of Sladkovsky, which took place as part of the festival Denis Matsuev with Friends, were broadcast on Medici.tv, while a concert as part of the subscription series Denis Matsuev – Soloist was broadcast on Mezzo. The State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan is the first regional Russian ensemble to have been recorded by this acclaimed TV channel.
In 2012 the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan was conducted by Alexander Sladkovsky in the recording An Anthology of the Music of Composers of Tatarstan and the album Enlightenment (Tchaikovsky’s Manfred and Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead) on the labels Sony Music and RCA Red Seal Records.
In April 2014 Alexander Sladkovsky conducted the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan at a concert at UNESCO headquarters in Paris as part of a ceremony at which Denis Matsuev was made a Goodwill Ambassador.
Alexander Sladkovsky is the founder and Artistic Director of six music festivals in Kazan – Rakhlin Seasons, White Lilac, Kazan Autumn, Concordia, Denis Matsuev and Friends and An Artistic Revelation. Performances by the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan under the baton of Alexander Sladkovsky have been recorded and broadcast by Mezzo television and Medici.tv.
Alexander Sladkovsky is an Honoured Artist of Russia, a prize-winner at the III International Prokofiev Conducting Competition (1999), “Conductor of the Year” in Russia according to the newspaper Music Review (2011), a recipient of the Oleg Yankovsky Artistic Revelation Prize (2012), winner of the Philanthropist of the Year Russian competition in 2011 and 2013, a 2013 Universiade ambassador, Principal Conductor at the opening and closing ceremonies of the XXVII World Summer Universiade, a member of the Council for State Cultural Policy of the Chairman of the Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, an honorary doctor of the international faculty of the UNESCO TISBI University of Management, a prize-winner at the Bellur Kalem – Crystal Quill competition (2013) and recipient of the TOP-35. Kazan’s Most Famous Citizens award and the prize Important de Facto of Tatarstan magazine.
Since 2013 Sladkovsky has been a recording artist with Sony Music Entertainment Russia, while since September 2014 he has been an artist with АМС. He received a letter of thanks from the President of the Republic of Tatarstan for his active involvement in the construction of a children’s hospice in the Republic of Tatarstan.

At present he is the Principal Conductor of the St.-Petersburg Academic Capella, conductor of the Russian National Orchestra and the «New Russia» Symphony Orchestra. As a guest conductor he collaborates with the State Academic Orchestra of Russia, the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra and also with philharmonic orchestras of St.-Petersburg, Moscow, Dresden, Belgrade and others. He worked with such soloists as Y. Bashmet, I. Bogacheva, Z. Sotkilava, N. Petrov, D. Matsuev, N. Lugansky, M. Fedotov. He took part in numerous international festivals including «Musical Olympus», «Arts Square», «Petersburg?s Musical Spring», «Rodion Schedrin. Self Portrait», «Russian Youth Academies», festivals in Schlezwig-Holstein and Weimar. Honoured Artist of Russia, in 2003 he was nominated for the prestigious Golden Soffit theatre award.
