Andras Schiff (Piano)

Andras Schiff was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1953. He began piano lessons at the age of five with Elisabeth Vadasz and continued his musical studies at the Ferenc Liszt Academy with Professor Pal Kadosa, Gyorgy Kurtag, and Ferenec Rados.
He also worked with George Malcolm in London.
Recitals and special projects take him to all of the international music capitals and include cycles of the major keyboard works of Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, and Barok. Between 1999 and 2005, Mr. Schiff performs all of Mozart's piano concertos at the Mozartwoche of the Internationale Stiftung Mozarteum in Salzburg; he has created his own ensemble, the Cappella Andrea Barca, for this project.

Mr. Schiff s 2002-2003 North American season continues to showcase his position of eminence as one of today's foremost pianists. In the fall of 2002 he performs with Yuuko Shiokawa and the Panocha Quartet in an all-Dvorak program presented by the Tisch Center for the Arts at the 92°d Street Y and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society.
Additional appearances in New York include a pair of performances at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall featuring an all-Bach program with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra to open the Great Performers Series and a recital. Additional recitals will take place at the Caramoor International Music Festival as well as in San Francisco, Chicago, Fort Worth and Kansas City where audiences will enjoy either the "Goldberg Variations" or the final three Beethoven Sonatas. He then assumes the dual role of playing and conducting the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a program including Schumann's Piano Concerto in A Minor and appears with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Bernard Haitink in Carnegie Hall.

During the next few seasons, the focus of Mr. Schiff s orchestral activities will be conducting programs of Bach, Beethoven and Mozart from the keyboard.
For the Bach celebrations in 2000, he gave many Bach recitals and conducted Bach's St. Matthew Passion and other compositions. In 2001 he directed concert performances of Mozart's Cosi fan tune in Vicenza and at the Edinburgh Festival.
From 1989 to 1998 Mr. Schiff was founder and artistic director of Musiktage Mondsee, an annual chamber music festival near Salzburg. He is presently joint artistic director of the Festival of Ittingen, a chamber music festival he founded in Switzerland with Heinz Holliger in 1995. Mr. Schiff is also artistic director of a series titled Hommage to Palladio, at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza.

Mr. Schiff has established a prolific discography, including recordings for ECM New Series, Teldec, and London/Decca. He has received several international recording awards, including two Grammy awards for Best Classical Instrumental Soloist (without orchestra) for the Bach English Suites, and Best Vocal recording for Schubert's Schwanengesang with tenor Peter Schreier.

Among other honors, Mr. Schiff was rewarded the Bartbk Prize in 1991 and the Claudio Arrau Memorial medal from the Robert Schumann Society in Dusseldorf in 1994. In March 1996, Mr. Schiff received the highest Hungarian distinction, the Kossuth Prize, and in May 1997, he received the Leonie Sonnings Music Prize in Copenhagen.
