Valery Kukhareshin (Actor)

People’s Artist of Russia

Born in Leningrad. In 1979 he graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography (course run by Arkady Katsman and Lev Dolin).

Since 1980 he has worked at Leningrad’s Youth Theatre on Fontanka. Valery Kukhareshin is one of very few of the theatre’s actors who was there when it opened and who continues to work there to this day. He has performed lead roles in every major production at the Youth Theatre under directors including Vladimir Malyshchitsky, Yefim Padve and Semyon Spivak. At the same time, he also performs at the Satire Theatre and the Andrei Mironov Russian Enterprise theatre in addition to appearances at the White Theatre.

His repertoire includes lead roles in the classical repertoire such as Cyrano de Bergerac (Cyrano de Bergerac, directed by Padve), Vershinin (The Three Sisters, directed by Spivak) and Myshlaevsky (The Days of the Turbines, directed by Spivak) among others. Valery Kukhareshin has performed countless spectacular and charming heroic roles, and artistically the theme of “the little man” is close to his heart, as are the themes of lyrical characters and typical characteristics.

Over the past five years at the Youth Theatre Valery Kukhareshin has performed lead roles in several premieres which have highlighted the various different facets of his talent. These roles include King Henry II in  The Lion in Winter (directed by Mikhail Chernyak) and Mendel Singer in  Job (directed by Lev Shekhtman). In 2010 he performed one of the lead roles (Don Bartolo) in  Le Barbier de Sйville (staged by French director Jean-Daniel Laval), while in 2011 he appeared in the premiere of Sergei Morozov’s production of Visiting Time.

Valery Kukhareshin has dubbed over two hundred foreign films, many of which he has done in recent years. He has dubbed non-Russian actors including Bob Thornton, Bruce Willis, Dustin Hoffmann, John Malkovich and Jeremy Irons. In 2010 Valery Kukhareshin dubbed the role played by Hugh Laurie in the series House. The actor has worked on several audio books and dubbed numerous Walt Disney Studio cartoons (DuckTales, Star Wars and Mulan). He frequently appears in films and series including Schliemann’s Gold (Heinrich Schliemann), Word to the Woman and ZETA Group among others.

Valery Kukhareshin has been awarded the medal For Excellence at Work while for his unique artistic achievements he has been personally thanked by the governor of St Petersburg.
