Following its traditions Saint-Petersburg Opera theatre once again turns to a
little-known nowadays work. The first Russian melodrama Orpheus by E. Fomin
based on Y. Knyazhin lyrics had been a great success in Moscow and
Saint-Petersburg on the turn of the 19th century but was later
forgotten. Orpheus is distinguished by an unusual musical form. It has almost no
integral action; it consists of multiple heterogeneous episodes which allowed
its stage producers to create their own work where emotional expression of
the heroes is directly connected with certain musical intonations. This project
by Yuri Alexandrov supposes his characteristic poetic convention, metaphor and
polyphony. The Word exquisitely interacts with the Music, the metaphors being
unpredictable allowing to intrigue the sophisticate audience…
